Farewell, Donald 'Duck' Dunn
When musicians talk about playing 'in the pocket', what do they mean? Listen to any of the classic soul cuts underpinned by the bass grooves of Donald 'Duck' Dunn and you have your answer. Dunn – who died on Sunday at the age of 70 – was a master rhythm player who propelled innumerable Stax recordings from Wilson Pickett's "In The Midnight Hour" to his beloved Booker T. and The M.G.'s' "Time Is Tight"; Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'" to Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood", not to mention pretty much every track Otis Redding ever recorded. The full list is staggering. Donald 'Duck' Dunn, 1941-2012, RIP.
